THE EXPERIENCE

Key West sits at the southern tip of the Florida Keys, surrounded by some of the most productive fishing waters in North America. Whether you're drifting over nearshore reefs, bottom fishing the wrecks, or trolling the offshore blue water, the variety of species available year-round is unmatched anywhere in Florida.

Every fishing charter with Captain Rio is 100% private — it's just your group on the boat. No sharing the rail with strangers, no rush, no itinerary that doesn't fit your pace. Rio tailors every trip to your group's experience level and goals, whether you're putting first-timers on their first catch or serious anglers targeting a specific species.

We depart from Hurricane Hole Marina in Key West aboard a 32 ft Stamas Sport Fisherman — a spacious, comfortable offshore-capable vessel with plenty of room for your group to spread out, relax in the cabin, or work the rods from the stern. All fishing gear, rods, bait, and tackle are provided.

Key West fishing is genuinely world-class. The reefs hold abundant populations of grouper, snapper, hogfish, and yellowtail year-round. Mahi-mahi run strong in spring and summer. Tarpon, permit, and bonefish haunt the backcountry flats. Whatever's biting on the day of your charter, Captain Rio will put you on fish.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Key West fishing charter FAQ

What fish can you catch in Key West?
Key West waters hold an incredible variety of species year-round. Common catches include grouper, snapper, hogfish, yellowtail, and amberjack on the reefs. Mahi-mahi and wahoo run offshore in spring and summer. The backcountry flats offer tarpon, permit, and bonefish for light tackle enthusiasts.

Do I need a fishing license for a Key West charter?

No — when you fish on a licensed charter boat in Florida, the captain's vessel license covers all passengers. You do not need to purchase a separate fishing license for your trip with Captain Rio.

What is the best time of year to go fishing in Key West?
Key West fishing is productive year-round, which is one of its biggest advantages over other destinations. Spring and summer are peak season for mahi-mahi, sailfish, and tarpon. Fall and winter offer excellent reef fishing for grouper and snapper in calmer seas. Captain Rio will always target whatever's biting best on the day of your trip.

What should I bring on a Key West fishing charter?
Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and non-marking soft-sole shoes are the essentials. Bring snacks and drinks for the trip — there's a cooler on board. All fishing gear is provided. Seasickness medication is worth considering if you're prone to motion sickness, especially on full-day offshore trips.

How many people can come on the fishing charter?
The 32 ft Stamas comfortably accommodates up to 6 guests. All rates are flat — meaning the price is the same whether your group is 2 people or 6, making it great value when split among a group.

What happens if weather cancels our trip?
Safety is always the top priority. If conditions are unsafe, Captain Rio will contact you to reschedule at no additional cost. Key West generally enjoys excellent weather, but Florida summers can bring afternoon storms — morning departures typically avoid these entirely.
