THE EXPERIENCE

Spearfishing the Florida Keys reefs with Captain Rio

Key West is one of the premier spearfishing destinations in the United States. The Florida Keys reef system — the only living barrier reef in North America — is home to abundant populations of grouper, snapper, hogfish, lionfish, and more. Whether you're a seasoned freediver or trying spearfishing for the first time, Captain Rio will put you in the right spots.

Rio is an avid spearfisherman himself with a lifetime of experience diving Key West's waters. He knows the reefs, the ledges, the wrecks, and the backcountry — and he knows where the fish hold at different times of year. Every spearfishing trip is 100% private, meaning it's just your group, Captain Rio, and the water.

We depart from Hurricane Hole Marina aboard a 32 ft Stamas Sport Fisherman, fully equipped for a day on the water. Snorkel and dive equipment is available on board. Rio will guide you through the safest and most productive spots based on conditions on the day of your trip.

Spearfishing in the Florida Keys is regulated — Captain Rio knows the rules, the seasons, and the legal areas inside and out. You're in expert hands the entire time.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Key West fishing charter FAQ

Is spearfishing legal in Key West?
Yes — spearfishing is legal in many areas of the Florida Keys. However, it is prohibited within Florida state parks, certain protected reef zones, and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary no-take areas. Captain Rio knows exactly where spearfishing is permitted and will keep your trip fully within legal boundaries.

Do I need spearfishing experience?
Not at all. Captain Rio welcomes all experience levels, from complete beginners to experienced freedivers. He'll walk first-timers through the basics and put more experienced divers in deeper, more challenging spots. Just let him know your level when you book.

What fish can I spearfish in Key West?
Common targets include grouper, hogfish, snapper, lionfish, and amberjack depending on depth and season. Hogfish in particular are prized for their exceptional table quality and are abundant on Key West's reefs. Captain Rio will target whatever is legal and in season on the day of your trip.

Do I need to bring my own speargun?
Equipment is available on board — let Captain Rio know when booking what you need. If you have your own gear you prefer to use, you're welcome to bring it along.

What's the best time of year for spearfishing in Key West?
Key West spearfishing is productive year-round thanks to the warm, clear waters of the Florida Keys. Visibility is typically best in winter and spring when seas are calmer. Summer brings warmer water and active fish on the shallower reefs. Captain Rio will always plan around the best conditions for your trip date.

Do I need to know how to scuba dive?
No scuba certification required. Most Key West spearfishing is done on a single breath hold — freediving style. Captain Rio will guide you through breath-hold techniques if you're new to it. The reefs are shallow enough that even beginner freedivers can have a great experience.
